4 Dates Through Sep 15, 2012

ABOUT ABOUT

Set in an imaginary town in northern Spain, The Legend of Nahia presents the healing journey of a woman survivor of rape through live music, story telling, dance and performance art. A surreal tale with mythological characters and tantalizing songs from the Spanish and Latin American coasts.

///////

The Legend of Nahia is a multi-disciplinary production that will be presented at Crossroads Music. It will feature live music, story telling, performance art, dance, acting and minimal staging. A multilingual production, the show will draw upon characters from folk and mythology. One of these characters is Nahia, a mermaid. The piece will present the healing journey of a woman who is a rape survivor. A dramatic work featuring beautiful folk songs from different coastal areas of Spain including Basque Country in the North, the Mediterranean coast, and some flamenco and Latin American selections, the show will be bilingual (spanish - english). It will include songs in Spanish as well as Spanish dialects such as Basque. “The Legend of Nahia” was written by Ondartza, a native of Basque country in Spain and inspired by a real life story. Ondartza was a 2011 Leeway Foundation Art and Change Grant recipient. With The “Legend of Nahia,” Ondartza, along with her band “Duende Musical,” wants to captivate the audience with the melancholy that characterizes music from coastal areas: from the nurturing quality of the Basque folk songs, to the energetic, rhythmic qualities of the Mediterranean and the nostalgic air of latin American songs. The plot of the story will be a narrated tantalizing legend, full of symbols, with the enigmatic and powerful visuals of performance art.
