NCDC returns to the Live Arts/Fringe festival with a genre-bending work that explores the complexity of our basic human quests. NCDC’s projects examine the role of the audience, providing windows for intimate and direct engagement with the work. This year, NCDC has been commissioned by the American Philosophical Society (APS) Museum to create a series of duets, and corresponding videos, in conjunction with the museum’s current exhibition Tempus Fugit: Time Flies with Chicago-based artist Antonia Contro. In line with NCDC’s ongoing interest in pulling dance out of the theater (TAKES 2010; Wandering Alice 2008), this dance follows two bodies from garden to gallery to video. Just before sunset, two dancers meet in the garden and a duet unfolds. Both dancers wield video cameras, filming their individual experiences from the inside of the dance, resulting in two distinct versions of the event. After each live performance, the resulting videos are posted in the gallery, side by side, accumulating new material with each new performance. The evolving videos reflect changes in the weather (wind, rain, budding trees, falling leaves), record the new bodies of the audience, and represent the energetic shifts of the dancers who embody the passing of time. The audience will witness both the live unfolding of the dance in the garden and the resulting videos displayed in the gallery. This dance meditates on the human desire to map, track and record our existence, to reflect on the past, understand the present, and pass something on to future generations. Choreographer Nichole Cansuo blends full-bodied dance technique and idiosyncratic gesture to make dance that examines the role of the audience, providing windows for the viewer to engage intimately and directly with the work.
