It's a celebration of Divas this year as Shannon Agnew's hilarious one woman show of celebrity impersonations, "If I Were A Drag Queen, I Would Be Famous" struts into the Philadelphia Fringe Arts Festival. This fast paced, cabaret style musical is packed with rollicking re-writes of Broadway songs, sharp satire, and show tunes. The show is part cabaret and part roast and trust us, the claws are coming out.
Acclaimed for her brilliant characterizations, stellar vocals, and fearless comedy, Philadelphia based entertainer Shannon Agnew recreates the magic of iconic Broadway performers through dead-on impersonations, an unparalleled blend of original parody lyrics set to popular show tunes, classic Broadway hits, and original short films.
Agnew's gift of perfect mimicry gets showcased in the lineup of divas she portrays. "Joining" the cast for the festival debut are Julie Andrews, Judy Garland, Patti LuPone, Liza Minnelli, Ethel Merman, Bernadette Peters, and Cyndi Lauper. But you never know what other diva will grace the stage. Agnew's electric presence and ingenious interpolation of classic show tunes and fresh comedy brilliantly blend to create an unprecedented theatrical experience perfect for Broadway aficionados and novices alike!
Heralded as a "new voice in musical theater" (playbill.com), Agnew's performance has been described as, hilarious, remarkable, magical, "haunting, beautiful, chilling, and real" delivered "with a skill far beyond her years" (Pace Press). Since graduating with a BFA in Musical Theater from Pace University in 2011, Shannon has performed across Philadelphia and the nation with Big Apple Musicals LLC, The American Family Theater, Quince Productions, The Ritz Theater, The Walnut Street Theater Studio Space, Beautiful Soup Theater Collective (NYC), Tea in a Big Mug (NYC) and SWEET: Actors Reading Writers (NYC). Returning from her second national tour, Agnew is elated to bring her art back to her hometown this September with her performance in the Festival.
The show erupted on the Philadelphia cabaret scene in the Red Room at Society Hill Playhouse in 2012, and has since bloomed into a new musical, inspired by such shows as "Legends in Concert" and "Forbidden Broadway". This year, "If I Were a Drag Queen, I Would Be Famous" has the honor of returning to the Red Room at Society Hill Playhouse to perform as part of the Philly Fringe Arts Festival.
