ABOUT ABOUT

A stage—A piano—A box.

It’s story-time. The storyteller is preparing to read one of the most beloved fairy tales of all time—Cinderella—but something goes awry. The book falls into a mysterious big box...and music breaks lose! What’s the storyteller to do? His story has been taken over by an opera and the characters are singing instead of talking. And to make things even worse, the story is not going exactly the way it’s supposed to; no fairy godmother or glass slippers in sight.

Come and experience Cinderella as you never have before. Children's Opera Box presents its own take on Rossini's beautiful opera with an original English translation adapted for children of all ages. Love, drama, laughter and some of the most amazing vocal fireworks come together to make this show an unforgettable experience for the whole family.

Six opera singers and a pianist bring this performance to life. And we do not only perform for children but WITH children. For this production we are proud to bring on stage at Cunningham Piano Company students from Tabor Youth Development Center who are singing the role of the Royal Messengers.

About the company:

Children’s Opera Box is an educational opera company in Philadelphia that presents opera to children of all ages. Our mission is to bring opera from the big theaters to children that would otherwise not have a chance to experience it. We strive to present them with an engaging, fun and inspirational operatic experience that will stimulate life-long learning and interest in the arts.

Our box includes all the props, costumes and gadgets necessary to bring a complete opera to life. If the box can come in, the opera can come out. And to make this experience really complete the children are not just in the audience, they are invited to join us on stage!

Since its creation in 2011 by mezzo-soprano Paula Rivera-Dantagnan, Children’s Opera Box has been working with schools and community organizations in the Greater Philadelphia area, reaching more than 2,000 children, some as audience members and some as active participants in our productions.

The members of our company are all seasoned opera singers who perform with companies such as Opera Philadelphia, Opera Delaware, Michigan Opera Theatre, Lyric Opera Cleveland, Utah Opera, Opera Memphis and Glimmerglass Opera. They all share a belief in the mission of bringing the joys of opera to as many people as possible.
