Description

Two young women fall unexpectedly in love. On the night of their first, tentative kiss, they are brutally attacked. With scenes alternating before and after the assault, this beautiful piece will make you laugh, cry, sigh, and cheer, while examining if progress has been made since its 1998 debut.

Stop Kiss is a surprisingly funny, heart warming yet haunting piece following two women on their journey to discovering their sexuality and their struggle confronting it. Sara and Callie meet by chance and are instantly drawn to each other in a way that neither can pinpoint. In an abrupt change of scenery, Callie is being interviewed by a detective about an attack made on herself and Sara. Callie is vague and evasive in her responses. Sara is in a coma. It is later revealed that the late night assault was precipitated by their first, tentative kiss although the attack does not take place on stage. A man harassed them and Sara rose to his taunts, causing him to retaliate. Through alternating scenes leading up to and following the attack, this play explores the budding relationship between the two women and how Callie must abruptly confront their decisions without Sara by her side. During Sara’s hospitalization, Callie is forced to address what has happened between them. She must answer to the outside world, her loved ones, Sara’s loved ones, and scariest of all, to herself. Despite its serious subject matter, this beautiful piece about falling in love will make you laugh, cry, sigh, and cheer while examining if progress has been made since its 1998 debut.
