Spoon River Anthology, the haunting work of Edgar Lee Masters, was an avant-garde example of literary prowess when first published in 1915. In the text, the dead of a Midwest burial ground speak from beyond the grave to relay the sordid details of their lives and deaths. Produced in association with the Manayunk Roxborough Art Center, original performances of Spoon River Anthology will be staged at Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Audiences will be privy to tales of scandal, lament and woe…to the ache that wrenches hearts no longer beating…to crimes both committed and avenged, forgiven but not forgotten.
Bring your own blankets, beach chairs, snacks and/or beverages. Enjoy a Saturday evening or Sunday afternoon picnic on the cemetery grounds!
Proceeds benefit Laurel Hill Cemetery and the Manayunk Roxborough Art Center, two nonprofit institutions working to engage and serve diverse communities in the Philadelphia region.
Laurel Hill is America's first National Historic Landmark Cemetery, boasting art, architecture, nature and stunning river views. This final resting place of numerous historic notables is open daily with free admission for self-guided tours or recreation. Joggers, dog walkers, bicyclists and photographers are welcome. Unique public tours and events are offered throughout the year, with all proceeds benefitting the preservation and educational mission of Laurel Hill Cemetery.
The Manayunk Roxborough Art Center (MRAC) is a nonprofit educational institution which offers a full complement of creative educational services to residents of the Manayunk-Roxborough community, as well as the greater Philadelphia area. Their mission is to help develop an appreciation for the fine arts, literary expression and related cultural endeavors to all ages. Their goal is to provide a meeting place for the artistic community and to connect those engaged in creative efforts with one another and the neighborhood at large. MRAC hosts 11 art exhibitions and 10 poetry programs annually. In addition, the center publishes the Schuylkill Valley Journal.
