Tennessee Williams began writing Queens in 1957 and worked on it until 1970. It tells the story of Candy Delaney, a transvestite living in a luxurious flat in 1950s New Orleans. Desperately heartbroken, she meets Karl at a bar, lures him home, where she will do anything for his true companionship.

Tennessee Williams began writing "And Tell Sad Stories of the Deaths of Queens" as early as 1957, while living in Florida. During a visit to his family home in Tennessee, he left the manuscripts in a trunk that wouldn't be given to his publisher until 1970. It is his only known play to directly deal with homosexual themes and characters. It tells the story of Candy Delaney, a landlord and interior designer living in a fabulous flat in 1950s New Orleans. She is a transvestite and has two young gay boys living upstairs. Desperately heartbroken after her partner Sid left her for a younger woman, she meet Karl at a bar and brought him home where she "will do anything for his true companionship. Nothing more." But Karl's companionship comes at a cost. Is it more than Candy bargained for?
